چکیده

Direct injection of CO2 into the ocean is a potentially effective carbon sequestration strategy. Therefore, we want to understand the effectiveness of oceanic injection and develop the appropriate analytic framework to allow us to compare the effectiveness of this strategy with other carbon management options. Here, after a brief review of direct oceanic injection, we estimate the effectiveness of ocean carbon sequestration using one dimensional and three dimensional ocean models. We discuss a new measure of effectiveness of carbon sequestration in a leaky reservoir, which we denote sequestration potential. The sequestration potential is the fraction of global warming cost avoided by sequestration in a reservoir. We show how these measures apply to permanent sequestration and sequestration in leaky reservoirs, such as the oceans, terrestrial biosphere, and some geologic formations. Under the assumptions of a constant cost of carbon emission and a 4 % discount rate, injecting 900 m deep in the ocean avoids ~90 % of the global warming cost associated with atmospheric emission; an injection 1700 m deep would avoid > 99 % of the global warming cost. Hence, for discount rates in the range commonly used by commercial enterprises, oceanic direct injection may be nearly as economically effective as permanent sequestration at avoiding global warming costs.

Predicting the amount of sequestrated carbon in rangeland soil under the effect of soil sampling depth and height using the response surface methodology (RSM)

Background and objectives: Organic carbon is one of the important parameters to determine soil fertility, and production ability and is a mind index for showing soil quality, especially in dry and semi-dry lands. The rangelands are composed of about 50 % of the world's lands and have more than 33 % of carbon reservoirs on earth. Considering the ranges as the most important terrestrial ecosystem...

Differing methods of accounting ocean carbon sequestration efficiency

[1] Presently, much of CO2 fossil-fuel emissions are removed from the atmosphere through natural ocean uptake of CO2. Many schemes have now been proposed by which the accumulation of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere could be slowed with intentional further storage of CO2 in the ocean. Our review of the literature indicates inconsistency in whether ambient ocean carbon uptake is included when...

Assessing the effectiveness of direct injection for ocean carbon sequestration under the influence of climate change

[1] This paper studies the effect of climate change on simulated efficiency of carbon injection at different locations and ocean depths using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity, ISAM-2.5D. Following the OCMIP carbon sequestration protocol, we carried out a series of carbon injection simulations. The ISAM results show that warming over the next 500 years under the IPCC S650 and WRE...

Enhanced Gas Recovery with Carbon Dioxide Sequestration in a Water-drive Gas Condensate Reservoir: a Case Study in a Real Gas Field

Gas reservoirs usually have high recovery due to high mobility and low residual gas saturation, although some of them producing under water-drive mechanism have low recovery efficiency. Encroachment of water into these reservoirs traps considerable amount of gas and increases the maximum residual gas saturation, which results in the reduction of gas and condensate production. Generally, the rec...
